The Accountants of the Construction Industry

In the Nigerian construction sector, a brilliant architectural design is useless if it exceeds the client's budget. The Quantity Surveyor ensures a project is financially viable from day one.

What is Quantity Surveying?

A Quantity Surveyor (QS) is an expert in construction costs and contracts. They are responsible for calculating exactly how many blocks, how much cement, how much steel, and how much labour is required to bring an architect's drawing to life, and exactly how much it will all cost.

While polytechnic Architecture students focus on design, and Building Technology students focus on physical erection, Quantity Surveying students focus on measurement, pricing, tendering, and contract law. In a country experiencing massive inflation and fluctuating material prices, a highly skilled QS is one of the most valued professionals on any Nigerian construction site.

"The Architect draws it. The Engineer calculates it. The Builder erects it. But the Quantity Surveyor controls the money that makes it all happen."

The ND & HND Curriculum Architecture

The NBTE curriculum for Quantity Surveying is intense. It blends deep mathematics, construction technology, and contract law.

Contracts & Cost Control

Advanced Measurement (Civil Works), Contract Law and Arbitration, Project Management, Tendering & Estimating, and Construction Economics.

The Modern QS Tech Stack

Manual measurement using scale rules is dead in top-tier firms. In 2026, a polytechnic QS graduate must be proficient in digital takeoff and estimating software.

๐Ÿ“Š

Advanced MS Excel

The absolute baseline. You must master complex formulas, pivot tables, and macros to build dynamic Bills of Quantities (BOQ) that adjust to inflation.

๐Ÿ’ป

PlanSwift / CostX

Industry-standard 2D and 3D digital takeoff software. These tools allow you to measure areas, volumes, and linear lengths directly from digital architectural PDFs or CAD files.

๐Ÿ“

AutoCAD & Revit

While you won't be designing buildings, you must know how to navigate CAD and BIM files to extract measurement data accurately.

NIQS and QSRBN: Your Professional Passports

To sign off on major government or corporate contracts in Nigeria, you must be a registered professional. Your HND is just the beginning.

The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS)

The NIQS is the professional body for Quantity Surveyors in Nigeria. During your HND, you should register as a Student/Probationer Member. To become a Chartered QS, you must pass the NIQS professional examinations (Test of Professional Competence - TPC).

Quantity Surveyors Registration Board of Nigeria (QSRBN)

Once you clear the NIQS exams, you are registered by the QSRBN. This gives you the legal authority to stamp and seal cost documents. HND graduates are fully eligible to take these exams, making them equals to university graduates in the professional space.

Admission Requirements & UTME Subject Combo

Quantity Surveying requires a mathematical mind. The admission parameters reflect this.
