What is NELFUND?

NELFUND was established under the Student Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act signed into law by President Bola Tinubu in 2023 and operationalised for the 2024/2025 academic session. It provides interest-free or concessional loans to students of accredited Nigerian federal and state institutions who cannot afford to pay school fees. Unlike traditional scholarship programmes, NELFUND is a loan scheme — recipients are expected to repay the funds after securing employment, typically through a percentage deduction from their monthly salary via the Nigerian Tax Administration System. However, repayment only commences two years after the recipient has secured a qualifying income, making it genuinely accessible during the often-difficult post-NYSC transition period.

NELFUND covers two categories of funding: tuition fee loans, which cover your institutional school fees paid directly to your institution, and upkeep loans, which provide a monthly stipend for living expenses. The upkeep component is designed to allow students to focus on their studies without the constant distraction of severe financial pressure. While NELFUND does not cover every educational expense — textbooks, departmental levies, accommodation, and transportation remain student responsibilities — it addresses the two most significant financial barriers to university completion in Nigeria.

NELFUND Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for NELFUND, you must be a Nigerian citizen enrolled in a programme at an accredited federal or state tertiary institution — federal and state universities, polytechnics, monotechnics, and colleges of education are all covered. You must be in good academic standing (no pending withdrawal or suspension), and you must not be a beneficiary of any other government scholarship that covers tuition at the same time. Applications are processed per academic session and must be renewed annually.

Before submitting, triple-check that every document is certified — photocopies that are not certified by appropriate authorities will be rejected. Ensure your BVN and NIN are linked and your personal details match exactly across all documents. Under bilateral agreements between Nigeria and partner governments, the FSB funds Nigerian students for postgraduate study (Masters and PhD) in countries including China, Russia, Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Mexico, Cuba, Hungary, Romania, and Turkey. Funding packages typically include full tuition, accommodation, health insurance, and monthly living stipends — the total value of a BEA scholarship often exceeds ₦15 million per year when converted at current exchange rates.

Every state in Nigeria has a Scholarship Board or a Ministry of Education desk that administers educational grants for state indigenes. The process typically requires a letter of indigeneship from your Local Government Area, proof of admission, and academic transcripts. Many state scholarship boards operate with minimal digital presence — visit your state government website, the State Scholarship Board office, or contact your state's liaison office in Abuja to access current application information.
